Paris Hilton Part II

As usual, Feministe beats me to the punch and figures out-- BEFORE I EVEN DO-- why I'm mad.

And yes. I am mad about the Paris Hilton thing. And funny-- I'm really not mad at her. I find myself feeling sorry for her. She is the public's favorite whipping tool right now and it's kind of sick. Feministe points out the ugly truth behind it.

People who are gleeful to bash Paris aren't doing it so much because she's snotty, lazy, famous-for-nothing, racist and air-headed. No. People are gleeful because she's a SLUT who's finally gonna get hers. Whenever people talk about her it's with some really unflattering language-- stuff about her "being full of STDs" or much, MUCH worse as Feministe points out:

Commenters hoped that she’d get a “full-cavity search,” talked about their sexual gratification at the sight of her crying and the description of her being dragged off by a prison guard, expressed their desire for her to be raped, and even said that “the next story should be about the whore dying.

Charming, right?

Well I don't like Paris Hilton but I don't think we can really claim that her sitting in jail is some great victory for justice. Far from it. The sheriff probably should have sent her home. The jails are massively overcrowded ands she is not a violent criminal posing any threat to society. Also, imagine that shitstorm that would ensue if something actually did happen to her behind bars-- attack or illness. Can anyone say media frenzy/lawsuit? I don't see why she should serve 45 days in jail. Keep her part of the sentence, she broke the law, she should be punished but by all means, send her home if it makes room for criminals who are a REAL threat.

And people wishing rape upon this woman (vapid though she may be) are the ones who really gross me out.

Anyone else forget we're at WAR right now?

It's not a major victory by any means, that I can agree on. However, she broke the law and celebrity or not, she needs to own up to it and deal with the consequences, just like everyone else. I don't agree with the 45 day sentence, and she will get out early for good behavior I'm sure. For me personally it has little do with the fact that she is the bitchy popular girl from high school finally getting what's coming to her and moreso to do with the fact that celebrities think they can do what they want and the law doesn't apply to them. I doubt it will effect the rest of Young Hollywood to any great degree and she will be back to her hard-partying ways in no time, but at least once, one of them had to deal with the consequences of their actions.

true indeed. I don't even think most of those people KNOW the word consequence

I know. I was watching some lame VH1 show recently about the young and famous kids in Hollywood, most of whom are essentially famous for nothing and there was a thing about people like Brandon Davis, Nicole Ritchie, the Hiltons (though I think the argument can be made that Nicky Hilton is ten times more admirable than her sister. While she too is pretty much famous for nothing, she manages to still remain classy and keep herself out of the negative spotlight, when she is in the spotlight at all) and so on. It was mostly about how 'Young Hollywood' is out of control. CNN right now is STILL debating this Paris Hilton nonsense on Larry King. Mark Geragos and Al Sharpton are having it out right now, it's disgusting.
